    NC ENERGY STAR & 2010 RESNET Conference

    The 2010 RESNET Building Performance Conference will take place on February 22-24, 2010 in Raleigh, NC.

    The RESNET Building Performance Conference is the premier national forum on home energy ratings, residential energy efficiency financing, and building performance business development. A special feature of this year's conference is that it will be merged with the North Carolina Energy Star Conference. This will give attendees a first hand look at one of the nation's dynamic regions and enjoy some tarheel hospitality.

     



    Student-funded initiative installs wind turbine on campus

    Appstate Wind Turbine

    After more than 30 years, a wind turbine once again is part of the vista in the Town of Boone. The 121-foot tall tower and Northwind 100 wind turbine is located behind the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center at Appalachian State University. The community-scale wind turbine was purchased with student Renewable Energy Initiative fees, and contributions from the Senior Class of 2009 and New River Light and Power. The area's first large-scale wind turbine was installed in 1978 on top of Howard Knob. The U.S. Department of Energy project was dismantled in 1983. (Photo by Jane Nicholson)

A new institute on campus is now expanding the University's outreach as well as its ability to partner with business, industry and other institutions to find workable solutions. John Pine, director of Appalachian's Research Institute for Environment, Energy and Economics discusses this new endeavor.

    Energy Center is Northwest NC HealthyBuilt Homes Community Partner

    Boone area's first HealthyBuilt Home

    The NC HealthyBuilt Homes program provides a certificate for homes meeting "green home guidelines" built by residential builders who practice sustainable, high performance building strategies making the home a comfortable, healthy and affordable place that reduces energy and water usage, promotes renewable energy use and helps protect the land where the home is built.

    The NW region includes 17 counties stretching from VA to TN to SC, and is home to 10 partner builders. For more information about the HealthyBuilt Homes Program, visit their website at www.healthybuilthomes.org.
