Directed-Build: The Architect as Choreographer Workshop

Event date:
Friday, August 8, 2014 (All day)

If design matters, then building matters. This day long, interactive workshop explores workflows and information management between the office and the job site in architect led design-build or, more accurately, “directed-build,” projects. The directed-build process presents the architect as a single-source of responsibility for the design, construction, and commissioning of buildings. When architects are also construction managers, managing design intent with constructed reality becomes a fluid and responsive process. Design creativity is thus responsible and construction craft accountable.

The workshop will provide case study illustrations of trade-based drawing packages, on-site construction management practices, and the logistic requirements for architects to reclaim control of the building process.  In a charrette phase of the workshop, participants will complete an exercise in the planning, scheduling, and sequencing a small sample project according to the strategies discussed.
