About
Appalachian State has served as the NC Wind Application Center for the national Wind for Schools program since 2012. The program is now broadening to include solar, hydro and ocean energy. Like the 11 other Wind for Schools states, when DOE/NREL program support ends in 2021 new funding sources will need to be secured and a state consortium formed.
Mission
The mission of NC REpS is to inspire and educate the next generation of the renewable energy workforce.
NC REpS has education coverage across the state: App State will maintain a focus on wind, solar and microhydro in the west; NC GreenPower has a great solar schools program; on the coast, the Coastal Studies Institute is our ocean energy partner and Jennette’s Pier will continue to educate kids on renewables.
Support
We need pledges of support for the 2021/2022 school year to continue this work, totaling $12k to $15k. No amount is too small! The national Repowering Schools organization will match this support.

Small Wind Research Site
At an elevation of 5,500 ft, the Beech Mountain Small Wind Research and Demonstration Site is a unique program to give first-hand experience with wind power technology in a world-class, class 5 wind resource. Beech Mountain is the premier site in the US for research, durability testing and demonstration of small wind turbine technology. Operating as an off-campus research facility of Appstate’s Sustainable Technology & the Built Environment department, students and faculty gain experience in wind turbine and tower technology, maintenance and operation of wind turbines, and data collection and analysis. Appstate also uses the site for wind energy education and hosts numerous training workshops.
