Experiential Learning of Met Tower Instrumentation for Wind Energy Assessment at Appalachian State

About

Wind energy education is an integral part of the curriculum at Appalachian State University. A part of the wind energy curricula at the Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment (STBE) is focused on wind resource assessment, especially the hands-on aspect of met tower installation and instrumentation. Students learn to assemble tubular towers, instrument the tower with the industry standard sensors, and document the commissioning process for traceability and bankability of wind resources. We train both undergraduate and graduate students with this important skill set anticipated of the workforce aspiring for the wind energy industry.
