2017 NEC and PV Systems: Inspecting and Designing

This one-day class will clearly explain and summarize the intent and application of the National Electrical Code relevant to photovoltaic (PV) solar electric systems and cover significant updates to the 2017 National Electric Code that pertain to PV systems. Because the photovoltaic industry is undergoing extremely rapid growth and new technologies are constantly being introduced to the market, Articles 690 and 705 of the National Electrical Code incorporate a large quantity of important changes.

The primary focus of this course will be inspecting plansets and system installations of PV systems for Code-compliant equipment specifications, grounding systems, conductor installation, labeling, overcurrent protection, disconnects, rapid shutdown, ground-fault and arc-fault protection devices. The International Fire Code requirement for access and egress for PV systems will also be discussed. Although many licensed electrical contractors and Code Officials in North Carolina have not previously had experience with Solar PV systems, as the PV industry expands more training is required to both safely install and inspect these systems. 

Qualified individuals will gain an understanding of how to incorporate both new and existing requirements of the National Electrical Code into code-compliant photovoltaic system design and installation, with emphasis on materials and methodologies specific to photovoltaic systems.

Instructor:

Thomas Honey

Thomas Honey is a U.S. Navy veteran with over 30 years’ experience in the fields of electrical & electronic technology. He founded Honey Electric Solar, Inc. (HES) in 1994, where under his guidance HES professionally installed and maintained hundreds of Solar Hot Water, Solar Pool Heating, and Photovoltaics systems in PA, NC, and VA. Currently, his focus is to maintain and service existing PV systems, while providing technical guidance to other PV installation companies. He holds Electrical Contracting Licenses in NC and VA, and is a NABCEP certified PV Installation Professional. As an Adjunct Professor within the North Carolina Community College System he’s taught Introductory and Advanced PV design & installation courses, Commercial Electrical Wiring courses (conduit bending), and ConEd classes about the National Electrical Code.
