CDIAC at APPSTATE

The CDIAC (Carbon Dioxide Information and Analysis Center) data archive at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) ceased operation at the end of September 2017.  The data collected over 30 years of operation transitioned to new archives.  The new archive for much of the CDIAC data is ESS-DIVE, maintained by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (http://cdiac.ess-dive.lbl.gov/).  ESS-DIVE is designed to provide long-term stewardship and use of data.  In the case of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere from the combustion of fossil fuels and the manufacture of cement, ESS-DIVE will provide long-term stewardship of the historic data but will not provide annual updates to the data time series.  The files at ESS-DIVE will thus cover years 1751 to 2014.

In the belief that continuing annual extensions and updates of the CDIAC time series on CO2 emissions provides important insight into the continuing challenges of understanding and addressing global climate change, the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University has committed to providing these annual updates.  The continuing data series will be identified as “CDIAC at AppState”.  The AppState effort is being guided by one of the founders of the CDIAC time series and the transition is being supported by former staff of the CDIAC program at ORNL.

The data posted now represent the traditional annual update of the CO2 time series to include data through 2015.  The update through 2016 will follow soon but will be later than the normal posting as the data management transitions between the host institutions.  We expect that the update to include data for 2017 will be in the time scales and formats familiar to CDIAC data users. The methods and data sources for the CO2 emissions estimates are currently provided at the ESS-DIVE archive (http://cdiac.ess-dive.lbl.gov/trends/emis/overview_2014.html).

The data sets below through 2015 should be cited as:  Boden, T.A., G. Marland, and R.J. Andres. 2018. Global, Regional, and National Fossil-Fuel CO2 Emissions. Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center at Appalachian State University, Boone North Carolina, https://energy.appstate.edu/CDIAC.

Data description: Carbon dioxide emissions by country from 1751 to 2015. Total CO2 emissions including emissions from solid fuel consumption, liquid fuel consumption, gas fuel consumption, cement production, and gas flaring shown in thousand metric tons of carbon. Per capita CO2 emissions in metric tons of carbon. CO2 Emissions from bunker fuels (not included in total emissions) in thousand metric tons of carbon.
