This day long workshop is designed to meet  ALL 8 hours of the required continuing education (CE) for NC General Contractors, as well as CE for architects and engineers. It will have a synchronous online and in-person option, if complications arise from covid-19 in person registrations will be switched to online with the price difference refunded.

  • Mandatory 2-hr class NCLBGC 101: What Licensed General Contractors Need to Know (8:30am-10:20am) taught by Chuck Perry
  • Cost-Effective High Performance Homes: Insulation Installation and Building Envelope (2-hr, 10:40am-12:30pm) taught by Chuck Perry
    This session will cover practical and cost-effective ways to create a comfortable and well insulated building thermal envelope. Likewise, it will explore how the two forms of moisture, vapor and bulk, impact our ability to construct comfortable homes. The course will use concepts such as thermal bridging, vapor drive, Grade 1 insulation installation, advanced air sealing, advanced insulation strategies to show the learner how air movement, water management and insulation work together to create healthier more comfortable homes.

  • Cost-Effective High Performance Homes: The Affordable Path to Zero Energy (4-hr, 1:10pm-5:00pm) taught by Rob Howard
    This workshop will cover the process of designing and building high performance homes on a budget. Building on content from the first session, it will address the proper way to design and install a right-sized HVAC system for a low load home, understanding the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index, the benefits of certifications such as the DOE Zero Energy Ready Home Program, and communicating the value to potential homeowners. Case studies will demonstrate examples of successful Net Zero Energy and Zero Energy Ready Homes.

Chuck and Rob

Chuck Perry, Lecturer for the Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment at ASU and owner of PerryBuilt 
Rob Howard, Performance Construction Manager at Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating

Chuck Perry was the Program Director for the North Carolina Energy Efficiency Alliance (NCEEA) from 2010 to 2018. He currently teaches construction at Appalachian in the Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment Dept., builds energy efficient homes with his company PerryBuilt, and works as a research assistant for the Appalachian Energy Center. He has 25 years of experience in the residential new home industry and over the years he has developed a passion for high performance construction and sharing better building practices with all stakeholders in the homebuilding industry.

Rob Howard is the Performance Construction Manager at Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating. Previously he was the Director of Construction at Habitat for Humanity of Catawba Valley in Hickory, NC.  He has been building energy efficient homes through Advanced Energy’s SystemVision program since 2001.  He built the first Net-Zero Energy Home in North Carolina in partnership with Appalachian State University in 2005. Rob became a HERS Rater in 2006 and started a company called Home Energy Solutions to provide green building consulting and home performance contracting in Western North Carolina. He is an adjunct faculty member at Appalachian State University.  He earned his bachelor’s degree and a renewable energy technologies diploma from North Carolina State University.
